April teased her millions of global adorers for weeks, showing signs of near-but-not-quite labor and otherwise enchanting her audience with cute right-at-the-camera gazes and tongue flicks, snack noshing and nuzzling with her much younger but handsome 5-year-old beau. According to April's official Twitter account, the baby weighed 129 pounds and measured 5 feet, 9 inches.

Seconds after birth, April tenderly licked her calf, which began to slowly pick his head up from the floor of the pen. The event was livestreamed by approximately 1.2 million people after fans avidly watched for about two months prior in anticipation of the big day.

"His entrance into the world was unnerving to even those of us who have witnessed animal births previously", Patch said in the statement.

April's livestream had more than 232 million live views and 7.6 billion minutes of live watch time since February, second only to League of Legends eSports, which has been around since 2012, YouTube said on Monday. The money raised will be used for giraffe conservation efforts, the charity Ava's Little Heroes and also go toward supporting the Animal Adventure Park where April the giraffe and her calf reside.

"April has recovered perfectly and is eating everything in sight!"

The yet-to-be-named calf is the fourth calf for 15-year-old April. That remains to be seen, as AAP is holding a contest to decide what they're going to call the new baby.

April will raise the calf, with weaning expected to take between six to 10 months. The calf will then move on to another zoo.

The calf was born yesterday at the zoo in Harpursville, New York, about 209 km northwest of New York City.
