Among the top performers in California in the The Leapfrog data was Inglewood's Centinela Hospital Medical Center, the only South Bay hospital to receive a grade of A. Some performance measures are risk-adjusted for patient severity and income so hospitals aren't penalized for admitting sicker, poorer patients.

Brian Connors, spokesman for the Southwest Healthcare System, which runs hospitals in Murrieta and Wildomar, said his company tracks all manner of feedback, from the stars and grades issued by groups such as Leapfrog to reviews from patients posted on Yelp or Facebook.

Part of the Leapfrog data comes from public sources, but the organization also asks for additional information from each hospital, said Lovella Sullivan, marketing director for Victor Valley Global Medical Center in Victorville, which received an F.

California ranked 28th nationally in the percentage of A-rated hospitals.

From 2014 to 2015, 56 California hospitals achieved "significant improvement" in preventing certain infections, including ones in the blood and those resulting from surgery, according to the California Department of Public Health. It assigns letter grades to make the grades simpler to understand. Of the 212 hospitals evaluated in Texas, only 38.2 percent received an "A". Leapfrog did not immediately respond to a request to explain why they were not included.

The state has created an interactive map where the public can check infection rates by hospital. "Our entire medical staff and every member of our team give their all every day to ensure that our patients are cared for in the safest environment possible, and we will continue to build upon this success and seek to continually improve patient safety at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System".
