Court records show Muhammad also was arrested in Washington state in 2004 after acknowledging he shot a gun outside his apartment.

Kelly Lilles, executive director of Catholic Charities, said the charity is not doing anything different Wednesday except adding a couple more security guards, and that it plans to operate as usual going forward.

He was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial in 2005 after a grand jury indicted him on cocaine and firearm possession charges.

The Fresno Bee newspaper reported that the gunman opened fire with a large-caliber handgun while cursing shortly before 11 a.m. near a Catholic Charities building.

"I never would have thought he would do anything like this", said Muhammad's brother, who asked not to be identified by name.

Dyer said Muhammad apparently did not know his victims.

"He told our detectives last night, he was not going to go down for shooting a security guard for disrespecting him, but was going to kill as many white males as possible", Dyer said.

Muhammad was captured on Tuesday and police said he attempted to alter his appearance after police issued a press release on the motel death.

Dyer also said in his press briefing that Muhammad told officers while he was being arrested that he was the man they were looking for. They said he then reloaded and killed a man in the Catholic Charities parking lot.

Shortly after, Muhammad saw a Fresno Police auto approaching, and he surrendered.

"It looks like a guy carrying his groceries home from the store", said Hughes, 66, who rushed home after receiving a frantic call about the shootings from a neighbor.

"We do not believe based on the information we have today that this is a terrorist-related crime", Dyer said.

A man who authorities said fatally shot three men, apparently chosen at random, had posted on social media a dislike for white people and government officials, Fresno, California, police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says Kori Ali Muhammad will also face at least two additional charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Police say Muhammed, who surrendered peacefully after shooting the three men, has told them he made a decision to kill "as many people as he could" after he was identified as a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Motel 6 security guard last week, the Fresno Bee reports.

Muhammad hid out in a ravine and practiced voodoo rituals after the motel slaying.

Although he reportedly shouted "Allah Akbar" while being arrested, police said his attacks were motivated exclusively by racism.

Dyer said he doesn't believe Muhammad feels remorse for the killings. Police say Williams was unarmed. Family members identified the second victim as 37-year-old Mark Gassett.

She saw her son a few days before he died and spontaneously told him she loved him and was proud of him. He told her loved her too.

Police said Muhammad kept walking, shot at another man but missed, then found another victim on Fulton Street and killed him.

All three shooting locations were situated near other in Fresno's downtown area.

Dye pointed to the fact that Muhammad spared the lives of a woman driver and her two children upon discovering they were Latino. The chief said Muhammad, who is African American, used the nickname Black Jesus.

Steve E. Wright, assistant district attorney for Fresno County, says the case against Kori Ali Muhammad will likely be submitted to his office Thursday.
