A man has been critically injured in an explosion at a house in north London.

"It would appear a short time later there has been an explosion within the address, this explosion has caused serious burn injuries to the suspect", a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.

Police went to the scene in Stapleton Hall Road, Finsbury Park at around 11.50am Wednesday (19 April) after receiving reports of a disturbance and a man armed with an axe.

'Officers attended the location and, as they arrived at around midday, there was a localised explosion within the property.

"Part of the ground floor and part of the first floor of the property and a shed in the rear garden were also damaged in the blaze".

Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters were sent to the scene, and the London Fire Brigade said one person had left the property before the emergency services arrived.

A hazardous area response team and an air ambulance were also dispatched.
