Haley to North Korea: Don't pick a fight with the US

North Korea, on the other hand, views the naval movement as an act of aggression and is threatening a nuclear strike if provoked by the U.S. The country has also warned that it could easily strike U.S. military bases in South Korea, where tens of thousands of American troops are stationed.

The U.S. Navy said it did not deploy the USS Carl Vinson to the Korean Peninsula as originally stated, but instead sent the aircraft carrier to participate in joint exercises with the Australian navy in the Indian Ocean. White House officials said a sequence of communication miscues with the Defense Department were to blame for the mix-up.

A Navy photograph showed the Vinson off Java over the weekend, traveling through the Sunda Strait.

Last Tuesday, Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters that the ship was "on her way up there because that's where we thought it was most prudent to have her at this time".

It is not clear whether the failure to arrive was a deliberate deception, perhaps created to frighten North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, a change of plan or simple miscommunication, the BBC's Korea correspondent Stephen Evans says.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News on April 9 that he dispatched the supercarrier the day prior to sending a powerful message to North Korea.

"I think when you see a carrier group steaming into an area like that, the forward presence of that is clearly, through nearly every instance, a huge deterrence".

The strike group - including the 97,000-ton carrier and its 60-plus aircraft, the guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E Meyer and USS Michael Murphy and the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain aircraft carrier - will arrive off the Korean Peninsula by the end of April now. McMaster said. "I mean, North Korea has been engaged in a pattern of provocative behavior".

President Trump views North Korea as the biggest threat to peace in the world, and recently dispatched Vice President Mike Pence to Korea to issue a stern warning that the US had lost its patience with the North.

At the moment, the USS Carl Vinson is expected to reach Korean waters sometime next week.

The U.S. has already sent the U.S.S. Carl Vinson to the peninsula, and reportedly plans to send the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan and U.S.S. Nimitz to the Sea of Japan in April.

"A carrier group is several things".

Shortly after the Pentagon announced the aircraft carrier's orders, North Korea released a statement condemning the show of force.
