Abedin Didn't Send as Many Emails as Comey Said

Congressional Democrats are pushing back against President Donald Trump's unexpected decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, casting it as the grounds for a special prosecutor to investigate potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Comey's firing comes as the FBI is investigating any ties between Russian Federation and Mr. Trump's associates.

The White House said the search to replace Comey, the bureau's chief since 2013, will begin immediately.

5/3/2017 Comey testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Earlier investigations, concluded in July, had not resulted in charges.

Justice Department officials said they recommended that Trump fire Comey citing his handling of the FBI's review of whether Clinton mishandled her emails while she was secretary of state.

"Whatever the merits of Director Comey's decisions, the investigated has just fired the investigator", Himes said.

"A brief statement from the White House stated that Comey has been terminated and removed from office".

Two days before the presidential election, Comey wrote a letter to lawmakers saying that the previous decision not to prosecute Clinton over her emails would stand. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said the White House was "brazenly interfering" in the probe.

"The FBI is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement", Mr Trump said in a statement. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any Trump-Russia investigation in March after the Justice Department acknowledged he had spoken twice with the Russian ambassador a year ago and had failed to disclose the contacts during his Senate confirmation process.

Trump fires FBI Director James Comey
Comey is only the second FBI Director to be fired. "This does not seem to be a coincidence". President, with all due respect, you are making a big mistake".

"His dismissal further confuses an already hard investigation by the committee".

"Director Comey had a very hard job", Gowdy said in an email. I appreciate Director Comey's service to our nation in a variety of roles. The 56-year-old Comey, who is popular among rank-and-file agents, was appointed four years ago. Even so, Trump's letter dismissing Comey held a stark reminder of another matter.

Sessions is the only FBI Director to have ever been fired.

The US Senate's top Democrat said he told President Donald Trump it was a "big mistake" to fire Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey amid a probe into Russia's alleged interference in last year's election.

Starting with Hillary Clinton herself, Democrats have blamed James Comey for her loss to President Donald Trump. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he told Trump "you are making a big mistake" when the president called to inform him about the informing.

However, he saved most of his righteous indignation for the president, taking aim at Donald Trump for ousting Comey while the FBI is running an investigation into his campaign.

Democrats - already angry that Congressional inquiries have been hamstrung by Republicans' willingness to defend Trump - anxious that the FBI's investigation may also be in jeopardy.

You can't escape the irony that the man who many believe stole the election away from Hillary Clinton and allowed Trump to win has now been fired by the man who most benefited from his actions.

Other members of Congress, largely Democrats, are doing a full-court press for one.
