10 students shifted to a hospital, who were on hunger strike for the eight days in Rewari, Haryana.

Girls in the village complain that they are subjected to daily harassment at the hands of boys while travelling to the neighbouring Kanwali village which has a senior secondary school - three kilometres from where they stay. "We faced a lot of problems earlier". We were left with no choice but to resort to hunger strike to make the government hear us.

The girls, studying in Class IX and X in Gothda Tappa Dahina village, broke their fast only after a local MLA met and showed them the written order. As per recent reports, the government has also issued a notification in the matter.

Mr. Sharma, however, said that notification formalities might take a few more days.

Government sources say the initial political response of the government to deflate the "upgrade our high school" chorus was woefully slow.

Initially, the government was not ready to upgrade the school because a minimum number of 150 students is required for the senior secondary upgrade, and Dahina village had less than 90 students.

Soon after the announcement, Deputy Commissioner Yash Garg reached the village with the official communication and broke the news to the girls, who have been protesting since May 10.

Television footage showed the girls' families rushing to them with juice boxes as the strike was called off. There are loads of problems that we need to face while going to the school. "Today all of us young girls have taken a pledge that for the sake of our education, we will stand up for each other", she said.

Thirteen girls from the village had gone on an indefinite hunger strike demanding that their village school be upgraded to the senior secondary level.

According to a senior BJP leader, the government, based on the feedback from its trouble-shooters, hoped that the girls and villagers will get exhausted and call off the strike. He also appealed to the society and panchayats to ensure girls' safety.

Summary: The girl students had been on protest since May 10, demanding upgradation of the village school to senior secondary level. While announcing the upgradation of school, the state government on Wednesday also deputed a principal in the school.
