In a battle between two strong Big Ten men's lacrosse teams, Maryland stood tall against Ohio State and won the program's first NCAA championship since 1975.

The top-seeded Terps faced Ohio State for the championship, a rematch of the Big Ten tournament title game and the third meeting between the schools this spring. A short time later, the Tar Heels scored and won it 14-13, extending Maryland's pain another year.

Ohio State (16-5) exhibited more juice in its step in the early going and got on the board first when senior attack Austin Shanks connected with at the 3:58 mark. Adam DiMillo and Dylan Maltz added two goals apiece, while leading goal-scorers Connor Kelley and Matt Rambo tallied one each.

Playing in the championship game for the third straight year, Maryland (16-3) avoided another heartbreaking finish when Ohio State ran out of time after rallying with three straight goals in the fourth period to pull within 8-6. Maryland allowed Ohio State to score twice in the first 10 minutes, but the Buckeyes finished with only six goals over the entire game thanks to tough defense from the Terrapins. The Buckeyes had never been past the second round.

Maryland-Northwestern Big Ten semifinal now set for Sunday
Before this matchup between the two schools, Northwestern won the regular-season series, taking two of the three games. He hadn't pitched since tossing an inning against Omaha on May 16 and had logged just four innings total in the month.

The familiarity between the Terps and Buckeyes was evident in a low-scoring game, which Maryland broke open with four consecutive goals late in the first half for a 5-2 halftime lead.

Terps keeper Dan Morris was doing yeoman's work at the back end, foiling a nice bid by the ever-dangerous Buckeye marksman Eric Fannell.

Ohio State had gone 15:29 without a goal until Jake Withers scored with 10:24 remaining.

Unfortunately, there simply wasn't enough offense to keep up with Maryland.
