Former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and 2 others have been injured after an explosion hit their auto in central Athens, local authorities say.

It is not thought that Papademos' injuries are life threatening although there were concerns for Papademos's eyesight, it was reported. "I wish a speedy recovery to him and the people accompanying him", Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras tweeted from Brussels, where he was attending the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

An investigation is underway in Athens after a former Greek prime minister was wounded when a booby-trapped package exploded in his vehicle.

GSEE wished Papademos and his two guards, who were slightly injured by the blast, a speedy recovery.

A statement from the Greek health ministry said he was being treated for wounds in his right thigh and upper body.

In March, a Greek militant group named Conspiracy of Fire Cells said it was behind a parcel bomb sent to Germany's finance minister Wolfgang Schauble, which injured a postal worker.

Among them was main opposition New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis who described the attack as a "cowardly terrorist attack carried out by enemies of Greece and of democracy".

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Rinne kicked a Bryan Rust rebound to the slot where Guentzel scored his 12th of the playoffs and his second of the game. Pittsburgh gave up a 3-0 lead and went the entire second period (and most of the third) without a single shot on goal.

"Whatever motivates these people, this kind of attack - politically motivated terrorism - is completely unacceptable", Schaefer said.

Authorities cordoned off the area, and forensics experts were investigating the scene for evidence. Two of the doors on Papademos's vehicle showed signs of buckling.

The explosion damaged the car's windshield, leaving no other sign of damage, but startled bystanders.

Police say the name "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei" has been used as cover by urban militants carrying out minor arson attacks against auto dealerships and police vehicles since the middle of the last decade. It was really impressive. I went out to see what happened.

The ex-prime minister was rushed into surgery for an abdominal injury, CNN Greece reported.

The country remains in recession with the highest unemployment rate in Europe, and a stalled creditor review has interrupted payouts under its global bailout programme, its third since 2010.
