Superhero movie fans who were hoping for more female-led films in the future can breathe a sigh of relief and pride thanks to these box office numbers.

But what's most telling about Wonder Woman's impressive opening is that, if you ever had any doubt, women can dominate the super hero genre not just in acting, but also in directing.

Wonder Woman scored the highest United States opening for a female director in history this weekend, with a three-day take of $100.5 million.

Oscar award winning actress, Lupita Nyong'o, took to Instagram to give a passionate review of the superhero film staring Gal Gadot in a lengthy caption stating that Gadot's performance "will glue you to the screen".

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as the title character, Chris Pine, Robin Wright as Antiope, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, and Lucy Davis. "You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it", she said.

There are also reports of an explosion at the shrine, the mausoleum of Iranian revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini . He led the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the Western-backed shah and became Iran's first supreme leader.

"I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains", Jenkins told Fandango. The film has made $223 million internationally. While “Wonder Woman” didnt match the box-office might of “Batman v. Superman” (a $166 million opening) or “Suicide Squad” ($133.7 million), it was much better-received than those roundly derided releases.

Deadline reports that Wonder Woman will conclude its opening weekend with a domestic gross of $103.1 million and beat Sunday projections.

While sitting down with Katie Couric for an interview with Yahoo News, Gadot was happy to discuss how the movie has become a symbol of female empowerment and said who she thinks would win in a fight between Thor and Diana Prince (Diana, duh). Soon, Diana leaves the island to try and stop the war, marking the beginning of her transformation into Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman also flipped the script on audience make-up, with a 52% female audience, as opposed to the average 60% male audience that superhero movies usually pull in.
