That he departed this time with a surprisingly lopsided 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-0 quarterfinal loss to sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria on Wednesday left everyone, including Djokovic, pondering the answers to hard questions.

Djokovic has not been at his best for a while now, winning just two titles in the last 12 months, and Wednesday's loss against Thiem means that the Serb will next week crash out of the top two of men's tennis rankings for the first time in the last five-and-half years.

Thiem will play nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal on Friday in the semifinals.

Svitolina won the first set 6-3 and raced into a 5-1 lead in the second before Halep bounced back and took the second 7-6 (6). "It was just today it was just odd how it came about".

Thiem is a talented, up-and-coming player, to be sure, and he is the only man to beat Nadal in the Spaniard's 23 matches on clay in 2017. You know, I'm trying to get better, trying to be on a high level again.

'He's a very good player.

"I think if someone is intentionally slowing a match down they should be punished for that, but it's a rule that is going to be challenging regardless of whether there is a clock on the court or not", added Murray. "I don't know, because we don't have the clock on the court so it's impossible for us to tell", said Murray.

What makes this defeat more appalling is the fact that the 30-year-old had a flawless record of 5-0 against the sixth seeded Austrian Thiem before this match.

While Thiem's part in Djokovic's downfall should not be overlooked, it was the Serbian world number two's astonishing collapse that was the talk of Roland Garros.

Djokovic admitted that Thiem was a worthy victor. "Just pretty bad set", said Djokovic, who split with his long-term coaching crew last month and announced shortly before the French he would be working with eight-times major victor Agassi.

Earlier Wednesday, Nadal reached his record 10th French Open semifinal when No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain retired from their match early in the second set because of an injured abdominal muscle he said began bothering him on a serve at 5-2 in the first.

Djokovic split with Boris Becker towards the end of past year as his number one ranking was about to disappear. Stan Wawrinka also squares off against Marin Cilic on Wednesday.
