More typically, conjoined twins are born joined at the chest, abdomen or pelvis. He said that the twins may not survive the intervention, or sometimes one twin survives and the other does not or is in poor neurological condition. The condition occurs when, in the early stages of development, an embryo only partially separates to form two babies. Heather said in a statement released by the Philadelphia hospital that they are planning quite a few parties for Erin and Abby.

Taylor is primarily a plastic surgeon who led the team of over 30 people. In addition to their CHOP positions, both surgeons are on the faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Twin girls conjoined at the top of their heads were successfully separated after an 11-hour long surgery at a Philadelphia hospital Tuesday.

Heuer described some of the operation details.

In the first half of the surgery, the surgeons focused on separating the conjoined twins' common blood vessels and the dura, which is the tough membrane that protects our brain.

Physicians monitoring the twins' vital signs and administering their anesthesia throughout the operation used green and purple tape, one color for each baby, to track their separate progress.

Conjoined twins from North Carolina are sleeping side-by-side for the first time, following separation at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The post-surgery care team also includes nutritionists and developmental pediatricians to help the newly separated babies thrive.

The Recording Academy announced new changes Wednesday, including its official switch to online voting for its 13,000 members. Other changes include nomination review committees added to the rap, contemporary instrumental and New Age genres.

The historic surgery took place at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and marked the hospital's 23rd successful surgery separating conjoined twins over the past six decades.

The twins are expected to go back home to North Carolina later this year.

On July 24, 2016, Abby and Erin were delivered by C-section and born 10 weeks prematurely, each one weighing about 2 pounds, the hospital said in a statement.

The babies now sleep side-by-side in separate beds as doctors and nurses monitor their recovery.

Heather and Riley plan to bring Erin and Abby home later this year.

The parents, Heather and Riley, can not contain their excitement about going home and throwing a big party after the conjoined twins will have fully recovered.
