Capitol Police officers in Mr Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson later died from his wounds.

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.

Earlier Thursday, President Donald Trump commented on the congressman's condition, saying Scalise was "in some trouble" but that he hoped the congressman would be OK. Then, another man injured in the shooting, Capital Officer David Bailey, threw the first pitch.

"I want to take a moment to send our thoughts, love, and prayers to Congressman Steve Scalise and his entire family", he said.

In a statement Thursday, a hospital spokesman said Scalise's condition was "critical with imminent risk of death" when he was admitted, but was improving after several surgeries.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Democrats easily defeated Republicans 11-2 Thursday in the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game, in an annual tradition that took on renewed importance in the wake of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

An FBI-led investigation into Hodgkinson (66) was continuing on Thursday.

"The members of Congress, the staff and the volunteers who were out at practice this morning care deeply about the causes they play to benefit", game organizers said in a statement released Wednesday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the attack, which has raised questions about lawmakers' security, renewed the nation's contentious debate over guns and drawn fresh attention to the harsh rhetoric that reflects the deep political divisions in America.
