"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to The Washington Post". "That's impossible. The president cannot be investigated, or certainly cannot be found liable for engaging in an activity he clearly has power to do under the constitution".

"There is not an investigation of the President of the United States".

The president wrote on Twitter: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

When Wallace noted that Sekulow had just admitted Trump was under investigation, Sekulow accused the host of trying to "re-phrase" his words - prompting Wallace to say "the tape will speak for itself".

It's not clear what prompted Rosenstein to issue this vague warning to the American people, though the timing likely offers some clues: The statement came a day after the Washington Post and the New York Timesreported that special counsel Robert Mueller was looking into whether President Trump's firing of James Comey constituted obstruction of justice, and a couple hours after the Post reported that Mueller was also examining Jared Kushner's financial dealings with Russian Federation.

Multiple investigations are looking into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian officials, including a Department of Justice probe headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Sekulow made four TV appearances on Sunday to clarify the situation.

But Sekulow claimed the president wasn't referring to an actual investigation in the message, but instead a news report about one. Russian officials have denied meddling in the USA election.

Trump advisers describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel following Comey's ouster in early May.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government. A Justice Department spokesman didn't rule out that possibility Friday, saying, "As the Deputy Attorney General has said numerous times, if there comes a point where he needs to recuse, he will".

"No, he's not being investigated", Sekulow interjected. The President's Twitter trail suggests that firing Mr. Mueller could soon be on Ms. Brand's busy agenda.

Schiff said if the panel can't get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed. The order also covers separate inquiries into several key Trump associates including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, campaign adviser Paul Manafort, foreign policy aide Carter Page and outside adviser Roger Stone.

Multiple committees in the Senate and House of Representatives are investigating various aspects of Russian election meddling.

"Senator, think about what you just said". Angus King (I-Maine).

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the investigations and reports that he is one of the targets of the probes as "a witch hunt".

Trump's lawyer Jay Sekulow appears on NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
