Christiansen is a rather inexperienced manager, with his only previous posts having been at AEK Larnaca and APOEL, but the 44-year-old is relishing the task that awaits him at Elland Road. "I think past year Leeds finished seventh, promotion should be the target".

Apoel, Cyprus's most successful club, were knocked out of the Champions League in the preliminary stages and Christiansen departed on 25 May, the same day Monk handed in his shock resignation at Leeds.

"I believe in my possibilities and that is why I am here".

"At the end, we want the same thing, which is promotion and getting to the Premier League".

Club owner Andrea Radrizzani appointed Angus Kinnear as managing director and Victor Orta as director of football soon after completing his 100 percent buy out of Massimo Cellino last month. "I can only promise intense work and that I will do my best", he added.

"There were many things that I didn't understand, that he showed us, normal things for me now to understand, but in that moment I couldn't see it because he was a genius - on the pitch, coaching. I have my ideas of how I want to play, but I have to adapt to different circumstances and the league and the players we have in this squad and of course, the opponent".

Orta stressed there was a "specific budget" for summer signings and that the head coach would have the last word on new players.

Meanwhile, Orta confirmed that former assistant head coach Pep Clotet, first-team coach James Beattie and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan have left the club and stated that they are to join ex-United head coach Garry Monk at Middlesbrough. It has always been a dream for me.

His last season in English football saw him playing for Rotherham United in 2015-16, where he scored a total of eight goals, and even got a red card in a 2-1 loss at home to Leeds United in April of 2016. "It's been a big target and now I have this big opportunity to come to Leeds".
