With this draw, Portugal and Mexico are in second and third place, respectively, in Group A with one point each.

Portugal went ahead when Cristiano Ronaldo's excellent work down the right wing set up Ricardo Quaresma, which was cancelled out by Javier Hernandez's smart header at the near post.

Ronaldo reportedly wants to leave Real after being accused by Spanish prosecutors of defrauding the authorities of €14.7 million (US$16.5 million, RM17.4 million) in tax through offshore companies.

Portugal had the ball in the net early on after a Cristiano Ronaldo volley crashed off the crossbar and eventually reach Pepe to score.

A moment of controversy came when Pepe's goal was ruled out in the 21st minute after there were appeals Nani was offside.

"It was not the result we wanted, the team had the game nearly won and we conceded a goal in the last minutes, but that's football", said Ronaldo. But with just moments remaining in the encounter, Hector Moreno nodded home the equaliser to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw for Mexico.

Of greater effect was the astute piece of vision later in the first half, which set up Ricardo Quaresma for a strike that counted, even if the speed and power that used to characterize Ronaldo initially failed him.

The second half saw both sides play with more caution, but Portugal looked good to get the "ultimate" goal.

King County records show that Lyle had been arrested on June 5, but the exact details of the previous incident were not available. Seattle mayor Ed Murray called the incident a tragedy and said it would be "fully investigated" by a federal monitoring team.

But Portugal's celebrations were premature as Moreno popped up with the equaliser. The team arguably don't have the elite level players of the very top national teams and certainly can't boast a Ronaldo, but Sunday's display backed up Osorio's thesis that El Tri can match any team in the world on its day.

"We are calm and we have to think about the next game. We're very happy with this first game".

"We have to win because if we win then we'll be a step nearer qualifying".

'We do not have to sound the alarm'. As the game continued to play out, however, Portugal showed why they are in fact one of the better countries in the sport, as they looked more and more risky on the counter.

"We also managed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo in check".

"We wanted to win, of course, but we have to be satisfied with this result against the European champions", Chicharito said.

Despite the disappointing end with Moreno's goal, Santos believes a draw was a fair result.
