Masters champion Sergio Garcia, who shot a 1-under 71, says "I think the greens are getting U.S. Open-like, but not as firm as they're going to get if we don't get any rain". As I've gotten older, I've gotten a little farther, but a lot more straighter.

Champ, a qualifier from Texas A&M, is leading the 156-player field in average driving distance over the first two rounds at 339 yards, and is tied for eighth on the leaderboard, two shots off the pace at five-under-par after Friday's three-under 69. Fowler's numbers over 24 hours went from 12 fairways, 15 greens and 27 putts to 11 fairways, 12 greens and 31 putts. He looked like he was making a move toward the tourney's leaderboard.

T1. Brian Harman (-7): Like Koepka, Harman wasn't flashy today - he shot just 2-under par - but remains in the mix after turning in a respectable 70. Johnson won by one, though maybe Fleetwood's most memorable moment there, for better or worse, was the embarrassingly bad high-five he shared with his caddie after draining a long birdie putt to pull within one.

And then, the old McIlroy kicked into gear and finished with a flurry of gained shots as he kept the ball in play off the tee and proved majestic with his mid-irons to set up several birdie chances.

"I was upset with the score I had made, but it had, in no way, any effect on my attitude or how I was going to then approach the rest of the round or the next shot. Johnson, who had bullishly expected to do well on a course he believed to be perfectly suited to his game, admitted he was surprised to be out after only 36 holes. "That's the frustrating part". Unlikely as it seems, that was the last major he played on the weekend.

How much prize money will the 2017 US Open victor earn? Nor are McIlroy and Day, marking the first time the world's top three players all missed the cut in a major.

"[Thursday], coming off an injury, I was a little anxious going out there, " McIlroy said. "For me, if I can just stay where I am, just keep doing what I'm doing, I'll have a chance".

It will bother Fox, which is televising this extravaganza, instead.
