The president responded by tweeting an attack on his own Deputy Attorney General, whom he'd previously praised to the hilt.

Although Kushner's current lawyer said in a statement that he is seeking advice rather than replacing or adding to his current team, it appears as if Kushner could be advised by a better legal experts than his father-in-law, President Trump. Specifically, Schiff wanted to know if former FBI Director James Comey would have opened an investigation into Trump's campaign "lightly or on mere hunch". The Post cited multiple unnamed sources familiar with those interview requests.

Then the president, according to Comey, asked Comey to drop the investigation into whether Flynn had lied to FBI agents and others. The New York Times also reported that Mueller was seeking interviews with Coats, Rodgers and Ledgett, although the report only described these interviews as an "indication" that Mueller was investigating if Trump obstructed justice.

Trump is under pressure to reveal whether he has any tape recordings of private conversations with Comey.

This produced substantial consternation in the news media and at the White House, since the president himself had tweeted over the weekend that he is being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey by the same person - Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - who recommended Comey's firing and that the investigation is a "witch hunt".

Whether or not Mueller finds these reports to be valid will be hugely relevant to any finding of obstruction.

In response to this rumor, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, co-head of the House Intelligence Committee said, if Mueller is fired by Trump, his committee would hire him, "so don't waste our time".

Instead of focusing on Mueller's friendship with Comey, Professor Turley defends the special counsel's integrity, but questions whether he himself ever discussed Comey's firing with the President.

To indicate that a full scale investigation has been launched, all eyes will be on Rosenstein's actions, as well as evidence of a grand jury subpoenaing key White House aides with a focus on Trump.

Carson's stance on the issue: giving Mueller "a chance", indicates a surprising break from the position being held by Trump and his administration.

He then went on to heap praise on Trump for both the size of his social media following and the way he uses it.

The problem is that trying to argue that Trump isn't under investigation doesn't just require a denial of facts that are broadly known, it requires a fleet of lawyers to run around Washington proclaiming that their client lied to the nation.

Sukelow subsequently did tell Wallace that Trump was being investigated by the Special Counsel when he was asked, in reference to Trump's tweet, if the President thought Rosenstein had done anything wrong.

As part of a wide-ranging inquiry into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia, FBI and congressional investigators are also reportedly looking into why Kushner met with Sergey Gorkov, a Russian banker who is a close confidant to Russian president Vladimir Putin, in December.
