The jury at Cosby's trial in Philadelphia began deliberating Monday over whether he drugged and molested a woman at his suburban estate in 2004.

Bill Cosby departs Montgomery County Courthouse.

Jurors at the court in Norristown, Pennsylvania, were put on the case at about 5.30pm local time and met for about four hours before being sent home late on Monday night, with deliberations resuming in the morning.

A veteran of the Philadelphia legal scene, he made his name in the district attorney's office prosecuting high-profile murder cases before moving into private practice in the early 1990s.

"Who says something like that?"

Mr Cosby denies the charge and his lawyer has said she agreed to sex.

Cosby did not take the stand to testify during the case.

Bill Cosby's wife, Camille, has arrived at court with him on the sixth day of his sexual assault trial.

McMonagle offered a narrative in which Constand had a consensual encounter and was not planning on making a charge - indeed, she had been contacting Cosby, the attorney said, to continue their relationship. The Cosby defense team had meant to present more witnesses to help make their case, but those witnesses were blocked by the judge. She came to the courtroom for the first time on Monday.

Jurors also heard Cosby's version in the form of his police statement and his lurid deposition in her 2005 lawsuit. Constand told the jury she was merely returning his calls about the women's basketball squad at Temple University, where she worked as director of team operations and he was a member of the board of trustees.

Constand initially settled the case with a civil suit in 2006, having waited a year to report the alleged assault to the police.

Whatever the verdict, the trial in Norristown, Pennsylvania marks a steep fall from grace for one of the towering figures of 20th century popular culture, once adored by millions as "America's Dad" for his seminal role as a lovable father and obstetrician on hit TV series "The Cosby Show".

"One of the greatest storytellers in the world and I'm failing", Cosby said when asked to repeat an answer in the deposition.

Cosby said before the trial that he did not plan to testify because of what could happen on cross-examination.

The lawyer wound down by saying that while Cosby was "not perfect" what was happening was an injustice. Prosecutors presented nearly no forensic evidence, and legal experts have said the trial fits the "he said-she said" arguments so common to sexual offense cases. Cosby had said before the trial he would not testify.

Defense attorney Brian McMonagle's arguably biggest courtroom drama, the sex assault trial of entertainer Bill Cosby, has been a legal rematch with prosecutor Kevin Steele, who was on the opposing - and losing - side of a almost identical 2014 rape case.

"This ain't right!" yelled defense attorney Brian McMonagle, who accused Constand of telling "a stone-cold lie".

Prosecutors will give their closing argument Monday afternoon. Insisting Andrea was a "lover" of the comedian - not a victim, McMonagle questioned her on the basis that the two willingly sat by the fire, drank Cognac, and burned incense together.

She was stoic during the defence argument but left when it was the prosecution's turn.

As they watched, Steele repeatedly asserted that, in a sense, Cosby had already confessed. He also said he had previously obtained Quaaludes, a powerful sedative, with the intention of giving them to women with whom he wanted to have sex.

He added: "All the fancy lawyering you have can't get you around your own words". He also pointed out that Constand telephoned Cosby dozens of times after the alleged assault. A prosecution expert testified that such assertions amounted to "rape myths". "We're talking about all the man's tomorrows".

The jury in Bill Cosby's suburban Philadelphia sexual assault trial has ordered dinner after 90 minutes of deliberations.

"She's on the phone with lawyers before she told her mom anything", he said, his voice rising regularly in agitation.
