The National Space Council dates back to Eisenhower administration.

Pence is touring the Vehicle Assembly Building, which is now under renovations to support Orion and Space Launch System Operations. President Donald Trump re-established the advisory group on Friday.

An airport spokesperson says V-P Pence is expected to land at Gerald R. Ford International Airport later today and temporary flight restrictions are now in place.

After President Donald Trump announced that Vice President Mike Pence will lead a revived National Space Council, Pence is set to visit NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Thursday.

Pence on Thursday said the council will bring together government, private sector and academic experts to push the USA space program forward. "Welcome to a new era of American leadership in space".

Pence didn't say when, how, where, or why America would return to the moon.

Pence's visit, which included a tour of the facility, comes as the Trump administration is beginning to chart its course on space exploration. Congress seems to be more willing to appropriate money for NASA, more so indeed than the Trump administration thus far.

A House spending bill, approved by an appropriations subcommittee June 29, would increase NASA's budget to almost $19.9 billion in 2018, including restoring funding for SLS and Orion to 2017 levels.

Pence, in his remarks at KSC, emphasized the importance of the private sector in ensuring American leadership in space. "The truth is, we're going to continue to foster stronger partnerships between agencies and innovative industries across this country because we have so much to offer one another". "I was praying for rain at the Kennedy Space Center so we might see that rocket go up today", he said.
