Dominion Energy is moving forward with what will be one of the first offshore wind projects in the USA, and has signed a strategic partnership with DONG Energy of Denmark.

Dominion Energy announced Monday it will build a small wind power project off the coast of Virginia.

Dominion had faced criticism from environmental groups after it let a $40 million federal grant for offshore wind lapse past year.

Dominion Senior Vice President Mark Webb says this is the first step in what they say are multiple turbines in the future that generate power for a half-million homes.

Engineering and development work will begin immediately, Dominion said Monday.

The project's site is 2,135-acre site is leased by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, which is adjacent to an 112,800-acre site leased by Dominion Energy from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

"Virginia is now positioned to be a leader in developing more renewable energy thanks to the Commonwealth's committed leadership and DONG's unrivaled expertise in building offshore wind farms", said Thomas F. Farrell II, Dominion Energy's chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.

There is now only one large-scale offshore wind farm, off the coast of Rhode Island and privately owned by Deepwater Wind. "We see the tremendous potential in the mid-Atlantic for emission-free, renewable wind generation and we are excited to help the commonwealth in reaping the benefits of wind power".

DONG Energy, based in Denmark with North American headquarters in Boston, owns 22 offshore wind farms in Europe and Asia.
