"Half the [17 million] population of Malawi is children, a majority of whom are below 15 years old, that is why we need to invest more in children".

Mercy James, the 11 year-old daughter American pop queen Madonna adopted from Malawi in 2009, attracted crowds at the opening of The Mercy James Institute for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care at Blantyre City's Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

Madonna has four adopted children from the impoverished nation, twins Estere and Stella, four years and the two eleven year olds, Mercy James and David Banda.

"Today marks a special day for me, and what started out as a dream has become a reality", Madonna said at the event, held in the commercial capital Blantyre.

The President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, described Madonna as "a loving mother".

He had declared Madonna a "daughter of the nation" during his speech at the opening, telling the songstress: 'You started by adopting four Malawian children, now we are adopting you as the daughter of this nation'.

Her mother Madonna revealed that she fought to build the hospital because, "children should never die of awful diseases we can easily cure".

The Mercy James Institute has been built in collaboration with Malawi's health industry and prior to its official opening, Madonna had revealed that the facility has already completed its first surgery.

The new hospital, which will include an intensive care unit, will double the number of surgeries performed each year.

"If you do things with love in your heart, you will conquer".

Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi, has built schools in the southern African country and funded the new pediatric unit, which began construction in 2015.

Madonna, 58, took all four of her adopted children back to their homeland for the unveiling.
