The two sides have been trying to negotiate a new contract for more than 15 months.

More than 1,200 nurses at Tufts Medical Center went on strike at 7 a.m. Wednesday after last-minute negotiations between the union and the hospital failed.

"We've offered raises of 5 percent on top of a 5 percent step raise for nurses who are relatively junior", Weingart said. The MNA said the strike will run until 6:59 a.m. Thursday.
