While the film has faced 16 cuts from the Censor Board, the director has attracted the wrath of the Congress workers over some portions of the film that they find objectionable.

Now, he had to cancel a promotional event of his forthcoming film Indu Sarkar in Pune today after receiving threats from Congress party workers.

The press conference was to be held at an educational institute, but Bhandarkar cancelled it as a large number of Congress activists had gathered at the venue. "Then we learnt that the press conference was scheduled at Crowne Plaza hotel on Saturday afternoon", he said.

Bhandarkar seems to be determined over the film's release and said that the controversy over the Emergency-based narrative is overpowering the real story of "Indu Sarkar" and he'll put a disclaimer in the movie and state it fictional.

"Congress workers have barged in the Hotel lobby and created ruckus, me and team are stranded like hostages in hotel room". Later, Bhandarkar tweeted " Congress workers hv barged in the Hotel lobby & created a ruckus, me & team are stranded like hostages in hotel room. "We criticize it, we condemn it", he told NDTV.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has demanded a special screening of the film - he said the party can not allow its "beloved leaders" to be portrayed in "bad light".

The film, which is set against the backdrop of the Emergency, has run into controversies. "Some of the Congressmen came to the hotel to register their protests against Bhandarkar's new film Indu Sarkar".

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) later suggested 12 cuts and two disclaimers in the film. Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Sanjay Gandhi.
