As such, AHS is issuing a precautionary air quality advisory for the entire North Zone of AHS, including all First Nations & Indigenous Communities.

A cold front moving in from the west is driving smoke into Alberta from the multiple fires burning in British Columbia as well as Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks.

Already in the North Okanagan the rating is a seven out of 10, which means the province has deemed the health risk to be high for those who are at-risk as well as the general population, when engaging in strenuous outdoor activities.

The Air Quality Health Index for Edmonton was low for most of Sunday but shot up to a 7 late in the afternoon before Alberta Environment and Parks lowered it back to a level 4.

Air quality can and will vary with weather conditions and prevailing winds.

Former champion Mark O'Meara will hit the first shot of the 146th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on Thursday. Open victor Brooks Koepka is playing with local favorite Tommy Fleetwood and world No. 2 Hideki Matsuyama.

Residents and visitors in the Calgary area are advised "to be aware of air conditions and take precautions against potential health concerns that can be associated with smoky air conditions".

Officials say that at times the smoke may cause throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Run your vehicle fan on re-circulate mode to avoid drawing in outdoor air. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease are especially at risk.

If you notice symptoms you should contact Health Link which is open 24/7 and toll free at 8-1-1. Because air quality is expected to be variable, this advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
