BJP to announce VP nominee after Presidential poll gets over on Monday

A day before the presidential election, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi described on Sunday the contest as a fight against a "narrow-minded, divisive and communal vision".

A day ahead of the election for the next President, and days to go before that of the Vice-President, Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a strong appeal for the Opposition candidates.

The BJP parliamentary party is likely to take a decision to this effect later in the evening.

Meanwhile, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Shivpal Yadav have gone against their party line as they have announced support for NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind.

She further said, "In these contests, numbers may be against us. But battle must be fought and fought hard".

"This election represents a clash of ideas, a conflict of disparate values. The election demands a vote of conscience to preserve the India that the Mahatma and that illustrious generation of freedom fighters, joined by thousands upon thousands of ordinary men and women, fought for".

"There was no way that we would have given the NDA candidate a walkover. and not put up a fight at all".

They will also answer any queries by MPs and engage with them in the closed-door interactive session, not open to the media.

She singled out Meira Kumar's role as Lok Sabha Speaker as a "duty she performed with great forbearance and with enormous dignity", while saying Gopalkrishna Gandhi has distinguished himself as a public intellectual, civil servant, diplomat, author and Governor, and who "has not failed to stand up to those who promote fear as they seek to suppress freedom and diversity".
