Ever since it was announced that a Mary Poppins sequel was in the works, we have been counting down the days till its official release.

We've been given out first sneak peak at the sequal to the 1964 Disney classic Mary Poppins which stars Emily Blunt in the lead role.

Mary Poppins Returns is being directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) and sees Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train) leading the cast alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana), Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Emily Mortimer (Hugo), Julie Walters (Harry Potter), Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Pixie Davies (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children), Nathanael Saleh (Game of Thrones), Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote), and newcomer Joel Dawson, with Dick Van Dyke set to make a cameo appearance.

The movie release might be more than a year away, but Disney is already getting fans excited about Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 original with Emily Blunt taking on the iconic role of Mary Poppins. "I wanted to pay homage to Julie and then carve out my own niche and do my own version of her". "In the teaser, her character says, 'Those things didn't really happen'".

"We both and the entire company and the creative time feel very protective of the original film because we love it so much", Marshall said.

Blunt and the film's director Rob Marshall spoke about the film at Disney's biennial expo (D23) on Saturday, where fans in attendance got to also see the first full teaser of the movie, which reportedly included clips that harken back to the original in the most delightful way: Mary floating in via umbrella, a big chimney sweep number, some kite-flying.

It opens as the Banks family are dealing with a tragedy which leaves Michael's three children Annabel, Georgie and John broken hearted. However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of the seven other P.L. Travers' books.

Mary Poppins Returns on Christmas Day, December 25, 2018. "This is a brand new original film musical from top to bottom, which is very rare, and it is a wonderful opportunity to create something specifically for the screen".
