Everton have continued their busy transfer window activity by signing Cuco Martina on a free transfer from Southampton, the club said on Monday.

Wayne Rooney has completed a return to Everton after 13 years at Manchester United, while big-money signings include Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Davy Klaassen.

He had been available for no fee after his contract at St Mary's ran out at the end of last season, and the defender has put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

An early-season injury to Jeremy Pied prompted Southampton to reconsider allowing Martina, 27, to seal his anticipated move to Goodison Park.

"I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I've now brought him to Everton".

Koeman was on the lookout for right-sided defensive cover with Seamus Coleman continuing his recovery from a broken leg.

"Everton supporters are really passionate about their club and everyone is excited about where the club is aiming".

"Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important", said the Everton manager.

Having made his debut against the Dominican Republic back in 2011, Martina has amassed 30 caps for the Caribbean nation of Curacao and he recently became captain. You can see this is a club that wants to achieve something and the players we are bringing certainly show this.

"It is also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad". Barkley had been given an ultimatum this summer of signing a new contract or being sold but last week his manager claimed his future was no clearer.

"When you come to a new club, you need to get to know one another so the training camp in Holland will be great for me and for the other new players as well".
