The England global, who scored five goals in his 36 Premier League appearances last season, has always been linked with a move to Tottenham, but Everton are reported to be demanding £50million for the 23-year-old.

Barkley has been frequently linked with a move to Spurs and a potential arrival has divided fans.

£50 million is an astronomical fee for any player of Barkley's quality, especially given that there is only one year left on his current deal. Everton would rather cash in on Barkley now than risk losing him for training compensation next summer.

Ross Barkley will miss Everton's second overseas trip of pre-season having failed to recover from a groin problem in time for the squad's departure for the Netherlands.

Everton have been particularly active in the close season transfer window.

Leaked financial results showed Eskom has only R20-billion left and will be unable to pay November salaries unless it receives a bailout.

The Everton midfielder, who could leave Goodison Park after failing to sign a contract extension, was again the notable absentee when Ronald Koeman's 25-man squad flew to Enschede on Monday.

A few years on from Barkley's breakthrough 2013-14 season and still there are question marks over what his best role is; is he more effective as an attacking no.10 or slightly deeper in central midfield? Even if Spurs get the price down to £30 million, that's still too much for a player who really isn't that great and would be available on a free transfer the following summer.

There is no way Spurs are paying Ross 120k a week.

Mauricio Pochettino, understandably, feels no pressure to sign players in a hurry and won't compromise the chemistry of the team to make a rush deal.

However, despite an expected push from Tottenham in the wake of their £54million Kyle Walker windfall, they are opting against pursuing Barkley at this stage.
