Wang, a history student studying 19th- and early-20th-century Eurasian history, is one of several Americans in Iranian custody, including Iranian-American art gallery manager Karan Vafadari and his wife, and Iranian-American art gallery manager Karan Vafadari.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the university said Wang was arrested while carrying out research linked to his doctorate dissertation on the Qajar dynasty.

Princeton said that it is "very distressed" by the charges leveled against Wang while he was carrying out scholarly research in the Islamic Republic.

After reports of his sentence, Princeton in a statement said it already knew of Wang's arrest, adding: "Since his arrest, the university has worked with Mr. Wang's family, the USA government, private counsel and others to facilitate his release".

In a statement, the department of State confirmed that "to be aware of information regarding Xiyue Wang, a u.s. citizen detained in Iran", a formulation that is generally interpreted as a confirmation.

Iran has sentenced an American citizen to jail on alleged spying charges. Rezaian has since sued the Iranian government, accusing it of hostage-taking and torture.

The Mizan article said Wang was born in Beijing and entered Iran as a researcher. The allegations were based on an anonymous "informed source", Mizan Online said.

The judiciary's Mizan News Agency said Wang had "spider connections" with USA and British intelligence services.

"The American spy arrested in Iran was also at the centre and his mission was to collect confidential information and documents", Mizan said, adding that he had copied 4,500 documents.
