And of course, many Trump critics are using the existence of the meeting - regardless of what was actually discussed - to prove collusion.

Donald Trump Jr. admitted having a sit-down with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin in June 2016, a meeting that also included former campaign manager Paul Manafort and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The attorney's focus on the law appears aimed at moving beyond the shifting accounts of the meeting given by Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr. later said in a statement that he had met the Russian lawyer at the request of an acquaintance, adding he turned the conversation to adoption of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act.

Cobb will be the central in-house figure on matters related to the investigations into Russian interference in the election and the Trump campaign's possible involvement, working closely with Trump's outside legal team led by Marc Kasowitz and John Dowd.

"They couldn't wait for the meeting to end", Mr. Akhmetshin said. The President's son has tried to discount the meeting, saying he did not receive the information he was promised.

The number of people known to have been at the meeting also changed over time.

In a statement to the Times, Mr Trump Jr said she "stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russian Federation were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Mrs Clinton".

Later reports revealed that lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, who was once a Soviet counter-intelligence officer, also attended the Trump Tower gathering.

Mr Goldstone suggested in an email that "people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Democratic Party front runner Hillary Clinton in her dealings with Russia", Mr Futerfas said.

The allegations have cast a cloud over Mr Trump administration since he took office.

As Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller deepens his probe into campaign activities, the White House on Saturday confirmed it had hired Ty Cobb, a veteran Washington lawyer, as a special counsel.
