Sri Lankan navy arrests 4 Indian fishermen

Pudukottai: Sri Lankan Navy arrested four Indian fishermen and confiscated a fishing dhow for allegedly engaged in illegal fishing activities in the territorial waters of the Island nation at mid night last night.

The fishermen, who were fishing off Neduntheevu, were arrested after they accidentally ventured into the Sri Lankan coast.

The arrested fishermen along with their fishing trawler and fishing gear have been brought to the naval base SLNS Elara in Karainagar. They will be handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward legal action, the Navy said. Fishermen activist U Arulanandam of Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen at Pamban, said the arrested country boat fishermen were produced before Kytes court in Sri Lanka and were remanded in judicial custody till July 31. On July 13, seven fishermen from Mandapam near here were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy at Neduntheevu and taken to Kangesanthurai port, for allegedly fishing in the Lankan waters.
