Varadkar says water charges will be refunded before end of year

The Taoiseach has said the Government plans to refund all water charges by the end of the year.

The confirmation comes following comments made by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in an interview with The Sunday Independent.

The exact process around how refunds will be calculated has yet to be announced and legislation may be required.

Mr Murphy (above) said it is his intention to make sure the majority of refunds are given before the end of the year although there will be some cases that will take longer if, for instance, people have moved homes.

It is unclear what money will go to refunding the charges, but Varadkar and Government sources have suggested that it may not come from Budget 2018 funds.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has promised that almost one million households in Ireland will be refunded for paying Water Charges. There are logistical issues as to how it's going to be done by Irish Water.

After more than 20 meetings on the issue, an Oireachtas committee agreed that those who have paid and those that have not paid should be treated equally.
