Mugabe Returns Home, Wife Hurt in Freak Accident

South African media has reported that the wife of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has suffered minor injuries in an accident involving the presidential motorcade after the 93-year-old leader's return from a trip for medical treatment.

State media have provided no further details on the accident, which happened after the Mugabes left the airport in Harare, the capital.

The freak incident occurred when the First Couple's chauffeur set the vehicle in motion before the First Lady had properly settled in. She tried get away from the vehicle but suffered a slight injury on her ankle which required hospital treatment.

In a statement explaining the Grace Mugabe injury, presidential spokesman George Charamba said; "First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe, suffered some soft tissue bruising on the right ankle as a result of a freak auto incident at the Harare International Airport early this morning".

The state-run newspaper says a police motorcyclist escorting the motorcade into town fractured his arm after he rammed into a pick-up truck on the main airport road.

"His Excellency the President, accompanied by Mr (Simba) and Mrs (Bona) Chikore, was with the First Lady throughout the examination, treatment and subsequent discharge".

"The First Lady is recovering at home", he added.
