They were looking at Marco Verratti, but later turned their heads to Paulinho, a Brazil global playing for Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League.

Paulinho's arrival comes at a time when Barcelona are rebuilding following Neymar's departure to Paris Saint-Germain, with Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho their primary target to replace the Brazilian forward.

Several European newspapers have indicated that Guangzhou have accepted Barca's offer, so Paulinho will head to Camp Nou for a reported fee close to €40 million.

Barcelona reportedly had a bid of £17m rejected by the Chinese Super League club in July but continued their interest and have now completed a deal.

He played 67 times for Spurs during those two seasons, scoring 11 times, but was eventually sold for a fee of around £10million as he headed to China in the summer of 2015.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo last month, Paulinho expressed his excitement at the then proposed move to Barcelona.

"It is a unique opportunity for me to be able to play for Barcelona, the best team in the world and surrounded by the best players".

Barcelona look in prime position to sign Coutinho who has agreed personal terms with the Spanish club already and earlier this week handed in a transfer request.
