Infiniti Prototype 9 brings us back to the past

It might seem odd for a company founded in 1989 to launch so retro a prototype, but under the historically inspired body, Infiniti says its new concept auto is blended "with the fusion of advanced EV [electric vehicle] technology".

Just as Lexus defined themselves by creating the LS as a Japanese S Class, Infiniti seem to want to borrow Mercedes history with this imagining of what an Infiniti from the same era would have been.

Despite the 21st century power source, the rest of the Prototype 9's construction is relatively classic, with leaf-spring suspension, a lack of power steering, hand-crafted steel body panels and a steel ladder chassis, and Infiniti sees the vehicle as a nod to its "origins" dating all the way back to, uh, 1989. And a grill from a modern Infiniti. Most of the Prototype 9's surfaces are hand-finished, while the interior switches are inspired by aircraft design.

We'll have more details when the Prototype 9 actually appears at Pebble.

Moto X4 press renders leak alongside full specs
Now a bunch of press renders have been leaked showcasing its final design schematics as well as revealing its complete specifications .

If you were anxious that those figures sound a little weak fear not, as a lithe kerb-weight allows the Project 9 to hit 62mph in just 5.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 106mph. It also has unassisted, recirculating ball rack steering and an old-school suspension setup that is electronically controlled.

"It started as a simple thought", Albaisa explained. The philosophy behind its creation also references the "seed of passion" planted during Infiniti's first Japanese Grand Prix. "What would this discovery look like?"

The Project 9 will make its official debut at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance on August 20th, at which point additional photos and information should become available.
