Air quality advice offered up in the Flathead

The conditions in Missoula, Lolo and Arlee were listed as Unhealthy this morning after smoke started accumulating in Lolo at midnight, and it made its way into Missoula by roughly 3 a.m., according to the Health Department's Sarah Coefield. Fires in Montana are causing severe localized impacts near active fires.

The evacuation warning in Seeley Lake runs from south of Rice Ridge Road to Double Arrow Road on the east side of Highway 83.

The air quality in Western Montana is seeing a bit of an improvement as nearby wildfires continue to spew smoke.

An Air Quality Alert means that particulates have been trending upwards and that an exceedence of the 24 hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) has occurred or may occur in the near future.

Particulate levels in Quartz Creek are very unhealthy.

Health Officer Hillary Hanson says that the air quality is measured in Columbia Falls and may not be reflective of the whole valley but there are other ways to tests the quality where you are.

When air quality is Unhealthy, people with heart or lung disease, smokers, children and the elderly should limit heavy or prolonged exertion and limit time spent outdoors.

Air quality has been progressively getting worse in the city of Missoula as well, climbing from moderate on Monday to Unhealthy on Thursday morning.

When air quality is unhealthy state and local health officials recommend that people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should avoid prolonged exertion; everyone else should limit prolonged exertion.
