Leicester City responded with a header from Japanese Shinji Okazaki to level things up before frontman Jamie Vardy put the Foxes infront with half an hour played.

Arsenal's victor also came from a set-piece, with Olivier Giroud heading home.

Arsenal had to come from behind twice to beat Leicester City 4-3 in a thriller as the Premier League season got off to a flying start on Friday with Arsene Wenger's substitutions turning the match around at The Emirates.

Arsene Wenger saw substitute Olivier Giroud score a late victor to see off Leicester before admitting he gave the striker a chance to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Arsenal's new signing Alexandre Lacazette took just 94 seconds to make his mark with a header from Mohamed Elneny's curling cross to equal the record for the fastest opening goal in a Premier League season.

Wenger shuffled his pack and Aaron Ramsey levelled with eight minutes remaining before fellow substitute Giroud wrapped up the points. At some stage, I opened the door for him because I knew that I had many strikers.

"I prefer to be on the pitch", the 30-year-old Giroud said, "but as much as I can I try to help the team reach its target".

"It is fantastic", Wenger replied when asked about Giroud's willingness to fight for his place.

"Lacazette is simple. In every game he is stronger since he has joined us", Wenger said. He also labelled the former Montpellier marksman as being "in his prime" and "at the top of his game". "He has a big weight in this squad and it was a relief for me that he made a decision to stay".

"For us it was a bit disappointing with the goals that we've let in and we shouldn't really be conceding in that way, but I think we showed great determination and great togetherness to get back into the game and we won it towards the end of the game".

"Well if you were a manager and you would be on the bench when you're 3-2 down with 20 minutes to go, and you win 4-3, you're more happy than concerned".

"The second goal was scored after a poor pass, which can happen, but we conceded the other two after corners".
