The Blues'captain Gary Cahill was shown a straight red card in the 13th minute for a lunge on Steven Defour.

Burnley extended their lead on 39 minutes when former Chelsea youngster Jack Cork set up Stephen Ward and they added a third before the break as Vokes headed home Defour's cross.

Chelsea improved after halftime.

Heaton made an excellent stop from Alonso's curling free-kick, but Chelsea did get a goal back with 21 minutes remaining, Morata swooping in to beat the Burnley keeper with a diving header after Willian's delivery found him in space.

Chelsea went down to nine men via a red card to Fabregas with about 10 minutes to go.

The story of the match was nearly encapsulated in the first few minutes of play when Marcos Alonso's reckless challenge was punished with a yellow and Ben Mee headed straight at Thibault Courtois from the ensuing free kick. Academy prospect Jeremie Boga was handed his Premier League debut in place of the injured Pedro, while the average age of the six outfield substitutes was just under 21.

"It was a pity because our fight in the second half was very good", Conte said.

"Your first win of course is always important when you are written off like we are every year".

- The British government is fighting back against criticisms that it is divided and unprepared for Brexit . European Union officials have expressed impatience with the pace of Britain's preparations.

"Instead we conceded three goals and the second half was very hard to change the result, despite the great commitment, the great desire, the great will of my players".

At 3-0 down and going into the second-half there was little inspiration for manager Antonio Conte to turn to on the bench.

Conte is desperate for reinforcements in the final three weeks of the transfer window.

The introduction of the club's record signing, Morata, on the hour mark sparked Chelsea into life and his first goal for the club threatened to help earn his new club an unlikely point.

"I'm not anxious because we have to trust in our work".

Burnley was expected to struggle this season after losing arguably its best two players in the offseason, defender Michael Keane and striker Andre Gray.

"But we're not getting carried away, it's a great result, brilliant for our players and supporters, but we know there's a big season ahead of us, and everyone is telling us it's a big challenge".
