The 23-year-old England global has struggled to secure a regular place since arriving at Arsenal six years ago, but Wenger believes the winger has the potential to become a great player.

Wenger has insisted several times that Sanchez will not be sold, although links with Manchester City continue.

On Wednesday (9 August), the Telegraph reported PSG had dropped their interest in the 28-year-old, handing Arsene Wenger a major boost.

"He had a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training and he had a scan two days ago", Wenger told a news conference.

He did, however, provide another update: that Sanchez had suffered an abdominal strain which would see him miss their Premier League opener at home to Leicester on Friday evening.

Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere are among the players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Furthermore, while the former Udinese and Barcelona striker has allegedly told his teammates that he is resigned to staying at the club this season before leaving for free next summer, City are still waiting in the wings ready to make a move.

Sanchez, who scored 30 goals last season, is set to miss Arsenal's trip to Stoke City.

However, Wenger was surprisingly upbeat over Sanchez's future.

Wenger said: "I think if you read the French papers they are on Mbappe's case to finish their transfer market".

"All is possible you know".

"It is a relief and I believe as well a reminder to the players that they have hurdles on the way and that we can get round it, like tonight so that is quite positive". Now, will we manage to extend his contract?
