The Syrian army said it fully captured the city of Sukhneh on Saturday, the last Islamic State (IS) stronghold in Syria's central province of Homs, state news agency SANA reported.

"Over the past two months, the larger territory has been liberated [from terrorists] than it had been under control of the Syrian government [before the Russian forces engagement]". The Syrian armed forces and militia with support from the Russian Aerospace Force by Sunday morning liberated Es Sukhne, thus giving opportunity for offensive to Deir ez-Zor, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The final push to liberate the city began on Tuesday, when Syrian troops recaptured strategic heights in the vicinity of as-Sukhnah and blocked the city, according to the Russian MoD.

Nuveen Credit Strategies Income Fund (NYSE:JQC) Announces $0.05 Monthly Dividend

Capturing Sukhneh would enable the Syrian army to break the IS siege to the eastern province of Deir al-Zour near Iraq, as Sukhneh is located on the road between the ancient city of Palmyra and Deir al-Zour. "It's such a basic point on the Euphrates River, which would largely, if not ultimately, tell about the end of the fight against IS", Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu told Rossiya 24 broadcaster.

"Today we can say that everyone is focused, set up for the fight against IS".
