"If he is, so be it, but we're trying to get him better". The kid has got to get a chance to play, and make some mistakes and grow from it, and make good plays.

Bowles added, in wise crack, "Well, he's not going to be Danny White either".

Bowles also said that Hackenberg will receive plenty of opportunities to prove himself during the preseason.

"I'm not basing this game exclusively on Christian's star debut as a movie theater actor", Bowles said. He's gonna get a lot of reps. "Whether he plays good or bad [Saturday] doesn't determine his reps for the next week [at the Lions] or after that".

Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy finished their second rounds in the near dark to ensure an early start wasn't required on Saturday. A score of +2 for the tournament with leave him 10 shots behind leader Kevin Kisner heading into moving day.

Hackenberg has mostly been working with the second team. Hackenberg isn't in the mix to start Week 1.

Thursday's training camp practice was the Jets' last before the preseason opener. Bowles announced that Bilal Powell (neck) will not play, and the status of Matt Forte (hamstring) has not been determined. "I just want to get [Hackenberg] in early and see what he does".

Bowles said he doesn't think the season-ending injury to top receiver Quincy Enunwa has had any impact on the slew of young receivers, fighting for another starting job.

Jets quarterbacks still have trouble sliding. All in all, considering the lack of talent on the field with Hackenberg, it was an inconclusive game.
