An encounter occurred between security forces and terrorists in Awneera village of Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian on Saturday evening.

Terrorits fired at the approaching security personnel, wounding five Army personnel, two of whom later died.

"Three terrorists were killed in the encounter", S.P. Vaid, director general of the state police, told reporters. There were reports that one of the militants could be a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen.

The soldier has been identified as Nb Sub Jagram Singh Tomar, who got grievously injured during the exchange of fire and succumbed to his injuries. The wounded policemen have been shifted to Srinagar for the treatment.

The police said there was information about presence of the militants in the area and the cordon was laid.

We urged him to initiate the process of creating a separate state... "Our demand is very much within Constitution", he said. Singh said every one is aware of the strategic importance of the locality and the challenges the region face.

The cordon and search operation was later called off as the militants managed to escape from the area.

In June this year, the Hizbul militant had released a video threatening of attacks against security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporting the militants, locals have been reported to have pelted stones on the forces as soon as the firing started. Police also said that the Itoo and two others were involved in a number of anti-national and militancy-related activities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the youth were martyred by the troops during a siege and search operation in Awneera area of the district.

Reportedly, seven civilians had sustained pellet injuries during the clashes.
