But in the case of Dennis Smith Jr., one interested club put him up to an eating challenge.

"We went out to some restaurant and they had me eat some octopus", Smith Jr. So the Knicks, who owned the No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft, arranged a meeting with the North Carolina State product in NY.

U.S. stocks also fell, lingering in negative territory the entire session, but notching smaller declines than in overseas markets. Nordstrom shares were up 1.63 percent at $45.60 following the apparel retailer's better-than-expected quarterly same-store sales.

However, this is not the first time Monk has expressed his surprise about NY passing on him in the draft. "I flew in there, I had a great meeting with them".

The Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. connection will always be a comparison, but for now, Dallas seems to have found the next cornerstone of the franchise.
