The incident came five days after another QOM-1 drone came within 100 feet of a F/A-18E Super Hornet flying off the Nimitz.

An Iranian drone made several passes by the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in the Persian Gulf on Sunday, the second such incident in a week and described by the Navy as unsafe, unprofessional and risky. The official said the US Navy used an emergency radio frequency to attempt to call Iranian ground units.

McConnaughey said Monday that there have been 14 incidents between US and Iranian aircraft this year in which the USA military labeled something the Iranians did as unsafe and unprofessional.

This latest incident is the second within a week that involved a drone interacting unsafely with United States carrier-based aircraft.

The US jet had to maneuver to avoid collision, with the drone passing just 100 feet away at its closest point.

McConnaughey says the drone "did not use any aircraft navigation lights while it made several passes in close proximity to Nimitz and its escort ships during active flight operations, coming within 1,000 feet (300 meters) of USA aircraft".

It follows another incident last month, when US Navy ship USS Thunderbolt launched warning fire at an Iranian patrol vessel in the Persian Gulf.

Last month, the USS Thunderbolt fired warning shots at an armed Iranian patrol boat in the northern end of the Persian Gulf after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps vessel came within 150 yards of the U.S. ship.

Officials said the Iranians did not respond to warnings from the American vessel, including the use of flares and a whistle, which led the U.S. navy to fire warning shots into the water.
