The Detriot Lions didn't even get through one quarter of their first preseason game, before potentially losing a key player for the entire 2017 season.

Detroit Lions defensive end Kerry Hyder appears likely to miss extensive playing time, after he suffered a "significant" Achilles injury in Sunday's game against the Colts. They fear that he tore his left achillies tendon, and he will undergo further tests on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter's sources. In 2015, he was on the Lions practice squad for most of the year.

Then, last season, Hyder proved to be one of the biggest surprises in the National Football League, playing in all 16 games and finishing with 36 tackles and a team-leading eight sacks.

Simone Inzaghi's side led 2-0 thanks to Ciro Immobile's double, the first from a penalty and the second a fine header after the break.

With top pass-rusher Ziggy Ansah still not back on the field, the loss of Hyder leaves Detroit with zero proven National Football League pass rushers.

There's no way to sugarcoat this: It's a bad injury for Hyder and a big loss for the Lions.

He proved the doubters wrong last season, but in a career full of uphill battles, he may soon have to deal with his biggest one yet.
