A sustained run of away fixtures to open the campaign for West Ham, a outcome of London Stadium temporarily reverting to its original goal to host the IAAF World Championships, continues with a trip to Southampton next weekend, when United is also on the road at Swansea City.

United manager Jose Mourinho splashed out £75 million ($96 million, 82 million euros) to sign Lukaku from Everton in the close-season and the 24-year-old needed just 33 minutes to get off the mark for his new club.

The former Chelsea forward struck again in the 53rd minute with a powerful header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick.

Matic was part of Jose Mourinho's title-winning side in the 2014-15 season before the holding midfielder helped Antonio Conte secure Premier League glory in the Italian's first season in charge.

There was still time for a fourth, however, as Paul Pogba curled in from distance.

Mourinho also believes his side are much better equipped for a tilt at the title than in recent seasons and said he is happy with his squad, insisting that the United team is starting to feel more like his side after the summer signings of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof.

The Belgian struck in the 33rd and 52nd minutes, first getting on the end of a ideal through ball from Marcus Rashford and then heading a second goal from a drifted Henrikh Mkhitaryan free kick after the break.

"I think the reality of the game, this was always a hard game for us".

Mourinho said: "I brought him to Stamford Bridge because I thought he was a player with special qualities and since I left I always thought he could be a flawless player for us". We lost two points against West Ham last season here and had lots of similar matches where we were dominant but didn't score enough goals.

United start their Premier League campaign at home on Sunday when the Hammers travel to Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

The Red Devils claimed a very impressive three points in their opening Premier League fixture, largely thanks to a brace from summer signing Romelu Lukaku.

"I think Real Madrid was too early for him", he said.

"It's promising. The manager wants me to create and be a leader for the team". They were very compact and after we scored the first goal there was more space for us. "I think we are ready".

"I don't put any extra pressure on myself because I always give everything, then normally the results are a good outcome of that work".

"The fans want to see attractive football and we have to stick to that".
