Two dead after helicopter crash in Albemarle County

Families and the law enforcement community are grieving after two Virginia State Police troopers were killed in a fiery helicopter crash in Albermarle County, Saturday afternoon.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said he and the primary woman considered the two men their dear companions.

"I have a message to all the white supremacists and the Nazis who came in to Charlottesville today".

Bates, with a license to fly and two years' experience with planes under his belt, was learning on the job he had just started two weeks ago, the father said.

Officials responded around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening to a wooded area near a residence on Old Farm Road.

Bates has family living in Knoxville.

The other was a pilot who exchanged to the state police flight unit a month ago and was one day from his 41st birthday. Pilot Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates died at the scene. He was texting his father earlier in the day about the chaos that had erupted in Charlottesville, according to The Washington Post.

The helicopter crash happened in Albemarle County.

CBS News reports that Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. W. Steven Flaherty also released a statement. The fearless men and women of the Virginia State Police, local law enforcement, and the Virginia National Guard are heroes who represent the true character of our Commonwealth.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jay and Berke, both of whom were our close friends and trusted members of our team.

"Jay has flown us over the federation for more than three and a half years", McAuliffe said in an announcement. "Berke was devoted to our entire family as part of our Executive Protective Unit team for the past three years", he said. "You're all among the best this country produces", Trump tweeted. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.
