A switch to Tottenham appeared on the cards, with the midfielder reportedly willing to take a pay cut to join the north London club.

Barkley, who has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, has less than a year remaining on his contract at Everton and it remains uncertain where he will be playing once the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

Ronald Koeman says that he is unsure how long Ross Barkley is facing on the sidelines with his latest injury problem, as questions over his future continue to mount.

Midfielder Barkley, who is entering the previous year of his contract, appears destined to leave the club having turned down the offer of a new deal.

"[Barkley] stopped training last Monday, it looks like the hamstring".

The player has also been dropped from the team often because of these concerns. The South African coach Arthur, however, has refuted Akmal's allegations.

And with Sigurdsson just days away from becoming an Everton player, some Chelsea supporters believe the Iceland global could be a replacement for Barkley - boosting their chances of signing the 23-year-old contract rebel. 'But we need to do more tests to know exactly what the injury is'.

Asked if the midfielder was in his plans this season, Koeman added: "I will wait until the end of August".

Meanwhile the club are set to announce the signing of Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson for a reported £45m.

Speaking ahead of the club's Europa League play-off first leg against Hajduk Split on Thursday night, Koeman added there was "no update" on speculation regarding Barkley's future.

The fee is a club record, and Koeman admitted that with it comes pressure on both player and manager. 'It's always about spending money, and with that comes more pressure'.
