The White House announced on Saturday morning that President Trump and first lady Melania will not attend the Kennedy Center honors, with the move coming after several of the honorees said they would not attend the traditional White House dinner the night before the event.

Sanders said that the Trumps "extend their sincerest congratulations and well wishes to all of this year's award recipients for their many accomplishments" in a White House statement.

"Each of this year's Honorees became known to and loved by the world due to their complete originality and bold genius", said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter.

The honours recognise the lifetime contributions of performing artists. "I must tell you, I'm not really happy as to what's going on right now with the controversies. But I think I'm just gonna wait it out for a minute, see where it's going to be by that time".

The KCNA state news agency did not say why the posters were being released now. "No one can stop our way!", it read. One of the posters shows a barrage of missiles fired from launchers toward a map of the United States in flames.

Writer and producer Norman Lear said earlier this month he would not attend Trump's White House reception because of the administartion's proposed cuts to art funding.

On December 3, 2017, the Kennedy Center will hold its 40th annual national celebration of the arts - The Kennedy Center Honors. On Monday, the president specifically called out "the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups" in unscheduled remarks at the White House, though some criticized Trump's comments as too little, too late. But the backlash against Trump was prompted by his handling of the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last weekend, which ended in the death of a counter-protester.

"Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our handsome statues and monuments", Trump wrote.

"In choosing not to participate in this year's Honors activities, the Administration has graciously signaled its respect for the Kennedy Center and ensures the Honors gala remains a deservingly special moment for the Honorees".
